Widespread power outage hits Cyprus amid extreme heat wave

A massive power grid failure occurred in Cyprus, temporarily leaving a significant portion of the island without electricity, Report informs, citing foreign media referencing the Transmission System Operator (TSO).

According to the TSO, the blackout was triggered by a loss of communication between photovoltaic parks and the distribution center, which resulted in the automatic shutdown of solar power plants.

The failure struck during peak electricity consumption hours. With temperatures reaching around 40°C, residents and tourists heavily relied on air conditioning systems, driving up power demand sharply.

Following the shutdown of the solar facilities, available generation capacity proved insufficient to meet the island's demand, triggering protection systems that caused emergency power cutoffs across several regions.

The disruptions affected large areas in Limassol District, the suburbs of Nicosia, and other parts of the country.

The TSO later announced that electricity supply in the affected regions began to recover following the reconnection of the solar power plants.

Temperatures in the capital of Cyprus currently reach 40°C.
