Uber faces €825 million fine for automatically blocking driver accounts

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has decided to fine Uber €825 million ($966 million) for violating European data protection rules.

According to Report, citing Reuters, the company deactivated drivers' accounts using automated systems without providing them with sufficient information about the decisions.

The fine could become the second-largest ever imposed under the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The only larger penalty was a €1.2 billion fine imposed on Meta by Ireland in 2023 for unlawfully transferring European Facebook users' data to the United States.

Uber said it plans to appeal the fine, calling the decision and the penalty disproportionate. The company said its current policies include human review and allow drivers to challenge account suspensions.
