Morocco appoints first female head of government

Morocco's King Mohammed VI has appointed 50-year-old Fatima El Mansouri as head of government, making her the first woman in the kingdom's history to hold the post.

According to Report, citing the Associated Press and a statement from the Royal Palace, El Mansouri has been tasked with forming a new government.

Before her appointment, she also served as mayor of Marrakech.

Her government is expected to invest billions of dollars in projects related to the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while also delivering on pledges to tackle inflation, raise wages and create new jobs.

Morocco held elections to the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament, on September 23.

The Authenticity and Modernity Party, which is part of the governing coalition, won the election.

Under Morocco's 2011 Constitution, the king appoints the head of government from the party that wins the most seats in parliament.
