Expert: Azerbaijan faces growing pressure due to freshwater deficit

Azerbaijan is facing growing pressure on freshwater resources, stated Fuad Baghirov, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Green Building Council (AzGBC) Public Association, at an event within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.

According to him, global discussions on sustainable development are often shaped based on Western European and North American models.

"These models are valuable: they offer methodology, structure, investor confidence, and technical criteria. However, they emerged under specific historical, climatic, infrastructural, and economic conditions. Our region has different realities, and this is particularly evident in the green certification system," he noted.

According to him, countries face different environmental pressures. Some economies still depend on coal, while others experience energy deficits and unstable infrastructure. "Some regions experience overheating, while Azerbaijan faces growing pressure on freshwater resources. Even neighboring countries, for example Georgia, have completely different conditions: Georgia has an abundance of freshwater, while Azerbaijan, possessing energy resources, experiences a water deficit," he said.

AzGBC is a non-governmental organization established in 2013 to promote environmentally sustainable standards and green building practices based on energy and water efficiency.
