Urbanization leads to villages gradually turning into settlements and settlements into cities, which directly contributes to population growth, Lewis Dijkstra, representative of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, said during a discussion within the framework of WUF13 in Baku, according to Report.
During a presentation focused on Baku, the expert demonstrated processes of settlement patterns and urban expansion.
According to Dijkstra, changes in city boundaries are a natural and geographically driven process.
"Sometimes two cities merge and become one, and sometimes a single city may split, resulting in two or more new cities," the European Commission representative noted.
Summing up his remarks, Dijkstra said that over the past decade, urban population density has either increased or remained stable.
