Oil output from Kursangi-Garabaghli block down 5.5% in 2025

A total of 0.85 million barrels of oil was produced in 2025 from the Kursangi and Garabaghli oil fields block located in the Kura Depression on Azerbaijan's onshore territory, Report informs.

This was stated in the Chamber of Accounts' report on the results of an audit of the formation and use of the State Oil Fund of Azerbaijan's funds in key areas.

According to the report, the figure was 0.05 million barrels, or 5.55%, lower than in 2024.

Last year, oil production from the fields had been forecast at 0.88 million barrels, meaning 95.6% of the projected volume was fulfilled.

The Kursangi and Garabaghli oil fields were put into operation in 1962 and 1960, respectively. The agreement on the rehabilitation, exploration, development and production sharing for the block containing the Kursangi and Garabaghli oil fields in Azerbaijan was signed on December 15, 1998, between the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, SOCAR, Frontera Resources and Delta/Hess Ltd., and entered into force on April 22, 1999.

Salyan Oil Ltd. was established as the operating company to carry out operations at the Kursangi and Garabaghli oil fields. Since March 2002, the stakes held by Frontera Resources and Delta/Hess Ltd. under the agreement have been acquired by China National Petroleum Corporation, CNPC. The contract area covers 450 square kilometers.

At the end of 2021, CNPC's stake was acquired by GL Group, a private production company-startup operating in Azerbaijan. During the development of the fields, 808 wells have been drilled, including 494 at Kursangi and 314 at Garabaghli.

GL Group operates a total of five oil and gas fields, including Kursangi and Garabaghli in Azerbaijan's Salyan district, as well as Buzovna-Mashtagha, Gala and Zira on the Absheron Peninsula. The group's portfolio includes operating companies Salyan Oil Limited and Taghiyev Operating Company, as well as GL Technical Services, which provides technical services in the oil and gas sector. In 2024, GL Group implemented its first international project by acquiring a 25% stake in Canada's Gazelle Energy Limited, which owns a 100% interest in a high-potential gas field in Türkiye's Thrace Basin.
