Germany sends fifth military aircraft with aid to Venezuela

A fifth Bundeswehr military transport aircraft has departed for Venezuela to help deal with the aftermath of a powerful earthquake, a spokesperson for the German Air Force said, Report informs via DPA.

According to the report, the transport aircraft took off from the military air base in Wunstorf, Lower Saxony, carrying specialists from rescue units, medical supplies and necessary equipment.

Two aircraft are expected to return on Sunday. After that, another aircraft is due to depart for Venezuela.

"Aircraft are planned to fly from here every day," the Air Force spokesperson said.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck northern Venezuela on the night of June 25. The US Geological Survey later said two more tremors with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 were recorded 40 seconds apart. The country's leadership declared a state of emergency.

A total of 214 aftershocks were recorded after the main tremors. According to the latest data, more than 1,400 people have died and over 3,200 others have been injured to varying degrees as a result of the natural disaster in Venezuela.
