Foundation laid for North Macedonia-Albania transmission line

Today, the foundation was laid for a 400 kV transmission line extending from the Bitola 2 substation in North Macedonia to the Albania border.

According to Report's Balkan bureau, this was announced by North Macedonia's Ministry of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources.

The ministry noted that this large-scale project is a strategic interconnection completing North Macedonia's electricity links with all neighboring countries and strengthening its position as a reliable partner in regional energy.

Minister of Energy, Mining and Mineral Resources Sanja Božinovska stated during her speech that this is a project defining the future of the country's energy system:

"Through the 400 kV line, we are strengthening our transmission network and consolidating our position in regional energy flows. This project sends a message to investors that our transmission infrastructure is ready for the future economy and the green transition."

According to the ministry, the project not only increases the security and stability of electricity supply, but also enables broader integration of renewable energy sources, encourages investment in the energy sector, and fills gaps in the national transmission system.

Through this interconnection, North Macedonia and Albania are strengthening regional partnership, ensuring stable exchange of green energy, and demonstrating that they are reliable partners in European energy policies.

The implementation period of the project is set at 900 days (30 months).

The project is financed by international partners, including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Union, and is a key part of Corridor 8.
