Five Indonesian airports reopen after Anak Krakatau eruption

Five of eight Indonesian airports temporarily closed due to volcanic ash from the Anak Krakatau eruption resumed operations by the morning of September 8, Report informs via Antara.

The airports were reopened after aircraft underwent inspections to ensure that volcanic ash had not affected their safety or airworthiness.

However, some sections of Indonesian airspace remain closed despite the eruption ending on September 7. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and the movement of volcanic ash.

The eruption began on September 4, sending a column of ash and smoke more than 15,000 meters into the atmosphere. Indonesia's meteorological authorities reported that the sound of the eruption could be heard from as far as 700 kilometers away.

Earlier, the spread of volcanic ash had prompted the temporary closure of eight airports across Indonesia, including Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.
