The need to build new housing in Berlin, amid population growth, is complicating the achievement of climate goals, Lars Loebner, a representative of the Senate's Department of Construction and Housing, said at WUF13 in Baku, Report informs.
He noted that Berlin has grown significantly over the past 15 years: employment, the number of workers with social security, students, and other population groups have increased. This has led to a housing shortage, rising land prices, and a reduction in space per person, he added.
He stated that while housing is in short supply, new construction is necessary, but this makes it difficult to meet climate goals.
Loebner also noted that large residential projects are being implemented in Berlin's city center and suburbs.
