Charles Lenjo Mwazighe: Proper communication between agencies crucial for mine clearance

If proper communication is not established between agencies during mine clearance operations, the work carried out will not produce results, Charles Lenjo Mwazighe, Director of the International Peace Support Training Centre, said at the panel session titled "Policy Integration in Mine-Affected Urban Recovery", held as part of the 4th International Mine Action Conference on "Humanitarian Demining for Urban Recovery: Setting Standards of Excellence for Safe Settlements," Report informs.

According to Mwazighe, inter-agency cooperation is important in mine clearance operations.

"If communication and cooperation are properly established, the process will move forward faster. Training should be conducted, teams should be properly organized and actions should be planned. The key is not potential, but the ability to use it. For this, agencies need to establish a coordination system," he said.

Mwazighe also put forward several proposals to address the issue.

"Military and environmental protection agencies should establish contact and work together on this issue. Environmental safety must be taken into account when clearing land. For this, a number of agreements and negotiations need to be conducted," he said.
