Azerbaijani candidate elected to UN child rights committee

Azerbaijan's candidate has been elected to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) for 2027-2031 during the 21st meeting of states parties to the Convention on the Rights of the Child in New York.

The Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan told Report that candidates from Azerbaijan and 16 other countries competed for nine vacant seats on the committee in an election held amid strong international competition.

Farid Adilov, a doctoral student at the University of Essex nominated by Azerbaijan, gained the confidence of the majority of participating states in the first round of voting and was elected to the committee with 130 votes.

Thus, an Azerbaijani citizen will be represented on the committee for the first time.

The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child is an authoritative treaty body that monitors the implementation of the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. The committee consists of 18 independent experts elected globally and reviews the fulfillment of obligations by states parties to the Convention.
