OGDC: National oil companies lag behind int'l firms in public transparency

National oil companies disclose less information in the public domain compared to international oil firms, Pietro Mezzano, Director of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), said during the second day of Baku Climate Action Week 2025 (BCAW2025) in the Blue Zone, Report informs.

"This is what we've observed over the past two years. However, national oil companies do have targets, ambitions, and a culture of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They strive for operational excellence and are, in fact, equal partners in this initiative. The BP–SOCAR collaboration is a good example in this context," he noted.

According to Mezzano, each company is at a different stage on the path to decarbonization: "In general, we've identified three clusters. The first includes companies that are still working on creating inventories to report greenhouse gas emissions, calculate CO₂ and other GHGs, and better understand their impact. The second cluster consists of companies that need technical support to define decarbonization targets, strategies, and ambitions. The third cluster includes companies that require assistance or mitigation action plans to implement decarbonization within their managed assets and joint ventures. We support these companies by grouping them along these three tracks and helping connect them with other industry associations."

The OGDC director concluded that ultimately, this process will require diverse stakeholder engagement, technological exchange, regulatory dialogue, and other collaborative efforts.
