More efficient irrigation of farmland and wider use of laser leveling technology are planned to boost yields and farmers' incomes in the Shirvan–Salyan economic region of Azerbaijan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Seymur Safarli stated, according to Report's correspondent in Bilasuvar.
Safarli made the remark at a regional meeting on the Shirvan–Salyan economic region within the framework of the State Program for the Development of Agricultural, Fisheries, and Aquaculture Production and Processing in Azerbaijan for 2026–2030.
The deputy minister noted that the Shirvan–Salyan economic region remains one of Azerbaijan's key cotton-growing centers: "In particular, Bilasuvar, Neftchala, and Salyan districts have long-standing traditions of cotton production, sufficient labor resources, and facilities for irrigation and processing."
He emphasized that the main task in developing the sector should not be the expansion of cultivated areas, but increasing productivity per hectare and raising farmers' incomes.
Safarli highlighted the importance of expanding the use of laser leveling technology in cotton fields: "Proper leveling ensures equal water distribution, reduces losses, supports uniform plant growth, and allows for more efficient mechanized harvesting."
The official also stressed the need to develop the entire production chain – from cotton cultivation to finished goods.
