Péter Magyar

Péter Magyar (born March 16, 1981, Budapest) is a Hungarian politician, lawyer, leader of the opposition Respect and Freedom (TISZA) party, and the Prime Minister-elect of Hungary following the parliamentary elections in April 2026.

Hungarian politics changed fundamentally with his arrival, and here are the main facts from his biography:

Past in the ruling elite For a long time, Péter Magyar was a full-fledged "insider" of the Hungarian system. From 2002 to 2024, he was a member of Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party. Magyar worked as an official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, represented the country's interests in the EU, and also headed the state Student Loan Centre. Until early 2023, he was married to Judit Varga, who served as Minister of Justice in Orbán's government (the couple has three children).

Rapid political rise (2024) In early 2024, amidst a high-profile scandal involving a presidential pardon that implicated his ex-wife, Magyar contentiously cut ties with the ruling party. He publicly accused Orbán's government of systemic corruption and of creating a propaganda machine. Leading the Tisza (TISZA) party, Magyar brought hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of Budapest under the slogan "Now or Never!". By the European Parliament elections in the summer of 2024, his party had already won about 30% of the vote, becoming the main opposition force in the country.

Historic victory in the 2026 elections The culmination of Magyar's political career was the parliamentary elections on April 12, 2026. The Tisza party won a landslide victory, securing over 53% of the vote and gaining a constitutional majority in parliament (about 138 seats). This event put an end to Viktor Orbán's 16-year continuous rule.

As part of his program, Péter Magyar promises:

Large-scale democratic and peaceful reforms within the country;

A tough fight against bribery and corruption;

Returning Hungary to a pro-European development path and restoring constructive relations with EU and NATO leadership.
