South African geneticists have discovered a mutation of COVID-19 in the country against the background of the second wave of coronavirus transmission, Report says, referring to RIA Novosti.
In addition, according to the Health Ministry of the Republic of South Africa, the new strain called 501.V2 spreads faster than the first wave, causing severe COVID-19, mainly among young people.
Health Minister Zveli Mkhize said that although novel coronavirus made concern, there was no reason for the population to panic. He stressed the need to wear protective masks and gloves, as well as to follow other rules applicable to the pandemic.
