Valeria Fedeli: Modern megacities becoming source of inequality

Modern megacities are increasingly becoming sources of social and territorial inequality rather than centers of sustainable development and wealth distribution, Valeria Fedeli, a professor at the Politecnico di Milano, said at an event during WUF13, Report informs.

She stated that large agglomerations concentrate wealth, high-tech jobs, and investment, but are unable to redistribute these resources beyond their central areas.

"Metropolises create isolated islands of prosperity but are unable to transmit this wealth to surrounding territories and regions," she said.

Fedeli noted that this model exacerbates the gap between central areas and the periphery, and also leads to the degradation of public goods and a decline in the quality of life outside major urban centers.
