Runze Wang: Migration management should be part of urban planning

Migration management must be integrated into urban planning and sustainable development systems.

Report informs that Runze Wang, Programme Manager at the UN-Habitat office in Azerbaijan, said this within WUF13 in Baku.

According to him, in many countries, migration management still has a project-based rather than systemic nature.

"When cities grow faster than planning and service systems allow, pressure on land resources, housing and basic infrastructure increases. This leads to overcrowding, rising housing prices and spontaneous development. Safe, adequate and affordable housing is not only a social need, but also the foundation of stability, dignity and social cohesion," he said.

Runze Wang emphasized that migrants and internally displaced persons should not be viewed solely as a vulnerable group, as they contribute to urban development through skills, labor, knowledge and cultural diversity.
