Oman calls for protecting human dignity in transition to smart governance

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) and the development of digital technologies must be accompanied by the protection of human dignity, Rashid Al Balushi, Chairperson of Oman Human Rights Commission, said during a panel session at the International Ombudsman Summit in Baku, Report informs.

Al Balushi noted that AI already plays an important role in promoting and protecting human rights in the Sultanate, particularly in healthcare and education: "Oman views technology as a tool for social development. We pay special attention to the rights to health and education. AI helps us in diagnosing diseases, disseminating information, and raising awareness about human rights."

The official stressed that one of the Commission's main tasks is ensuring equal access to modern technologies: "Our goal is to make technology accessible to all categories of the population, especially persons with disabilities, children, and the elderly."

He added that the transition to smart governance must be carried out with unconditional respect for the principle of human dignity: "We are convinced that moving toward smart governance requires protecting human dignity as a top priority. This fully aligns with our Basic Law, which defines the framework for the use of technology."
