No country in the Balkan region can build energy security alone, Sanja Božinovska, North Macedonia's Minister of Energy, Mining, and Mineral Resources, said at the Energy Transition Summit in Athens, Report informs.
The minister stressed that her country is committed to being a reliable partner in Europe's energy integration, contributing to the stability, security, and sustainable development of South‑Eastern Europe.
She underlined that recent years have shown clearly that energy security cannot be achieved in isolation, and that any transition must be safe, affordable, and attractive for investment:
"For my country, this is a matter of energy security, economic competitiveness, and social stability. Therefore, achieving the 2030 targets carries three meanings for us: building regional interconnectors as security infrastructure, integration of renewable energy sources through grids, as well as keeping the transition affordable, socially just, and attractive for investments."
She highlighted her country's achievements in the energy sector, noting the importance of turning geographic position into an advantage.
"The gas interconnector with Greece is the prime example of this. With an initial annual transmission capacity of 1.2 billion cubic meters, expandable up to 2.8 billion cubic meters, this project is changing our country's position in the energy system and turning us into part of a regional corridor. This is important because today diversification does not just mean more suppliers. It means more routes, greater flexibility, and higher resilience," the minister noted.
Božinovska emphasized that through its connection with Greece, North Macedonia is strengthening access to regional gas flows, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure.
