Azerbaijan is expected to complete its research on integrating additional renewable energy sources into the national grid by the end of this year or early next year, Elchin Targuliyev, solar and wind energy expert at SOCAR Green, said at the Baku Climate Action Week (BCAW2025).
According to Targuliyev, the study conducted in collaboration with China Energy and other companies focuses on determining how much additional renewable capacity can be connected to the grid, what upgrades will be needed, and how much energy storage is required: "We hope to finalize this research by the end of this year or the beginning of next."
He added that Azerbaijan aims to export around 4 GW of green energy, mainly to Europe, by 2040.
"Given the intermittent nature of renewables, we may need to install capacity up to three times higher than the 4 GW planned for export. Currently, the integration capacity of our national grid stands at 2 GW. Large-scale renewables will primarily be directed toward export routes-via the Caspian and Black seas to Europe, as well as through the Azerbaijan–Nakhchivan–Zangazur Corridor–Türkiye–Bulgaria path. Another route runs from Azerbaijan through Georgia and Türkiye to Bulgaria," the expert noted.
