Keyu Jin sees China-US ties moving toward strategic stability

China is placing greater emphasis on the exchange of technology and expertise, Keyu Jin, Chair of the Center for Macro-Finance and Geoeconomics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, said.

According to Report, Jin made the remarks at the Second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum (AIIF 2026) in Baku.

She said it would be wrong to view China's model simply as that of the "world's factory."

"That model is already evolving. You cannot export products around the world without continuously sharing Chinese technology, employing local workers, implementing local projects that create new jobs and making local investments," she said.

Jin noted that the nature of China's trade engagement would therefore change.

"China understands very well that it needs to share some of its latest technologies and have a positive impact on these countries. This shows that the process is moving from the 'world's factory' stage toward the exchange of knowledge, experience and expertise," she said.

Jin also said it was not far from reality to suggest that China-US relations were shifting from strategic competition back toward strategic stability, which she attributed to a form of compelled parity.

"I think what we have seen over the past few years - export controls, trade wars, numerous confrontations and even talk of decoupling, although we have not seen full decoupling, particularly in trade - shows that middle powers and global powers play a major role in ensuring the resilience of the global economy and making use of existing opportunities," she
