The Turkish Foreign Ministry has called on Europe to remain objective on the Cyprus issue amid plans by the European Union to allocate funds to Greece for the construction of a monument in Cyprus that discredits the Turkish Armed Forces.
Report cites the Turkish Foreign Ministry as saying that recommendations to allocate the funds are contained in the European Parliament's Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality opinion on the EU budget for 2027.
"The Turkish Armed Forces prevented the destruction of the Turkish population of Cyprus during the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation and brought peace to the island, which has lasted for more than half a century," the Turkish ministry said.
It noted that theories put forward by the Greek side distort and politicize historical facts.
"The fact that EU institutions, instead of contributing to a solution to the Cyprus issue, are moving away from the principles of impartiality and fairness and becoming an instrument of Greek-side propaganda further undermines intercommunal trust," the statement said.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry called on EU officials not to support circles interested in distancing Türkiye from the EU.
