Putin, Erdogan discuss Akkuyu nuclear plant, new energy projects

Russia and Türkiye continue to implement major joint projects, including the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant and other power generation projects, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Bishkek, Report informs, citing Russian media.

"Large-scale joint projects are continuing. One of them is well known to everyone - the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant," Putin said.

He stressed that Türkiye is one of Russia's privileged partners in both foreign policy and economic relations.

Erdogan said relations between the two countries are currently at their highest level. Noting that construction of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is in its final stage, he proposed that the two leaders commission the plant together.

Putin said he was confident that Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom would commission the plant's first unit in 2026.

"Alongside the opening of this facility, we will also take joint steps toward opening new power plants. We are carrying out preparatory work in this area," Erdogan added, without disclosing details of the projects.

The leaders of countries in the region are in Kyrgyzstan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
