Merab Chukhua calls on international community to recognize genocide of Circassians

Only around 10% of Circassians currently live in their historical homeland, while the remaining 90% are dispersed across the world, Professor Merab Chukhua, Head of Institute of Caucasiology at Tbilisi State University, said.

According to Report's correspondent in Shusha, speaking during the international conference titled "Cultural and Ethnic Diversity: Lessons from History, Contemporary Challenges," the professor said the Circassian people are seeking to facilitate the return of the descendants of those who were forcibly expelled from their ancestral lands.

"The goal of the Circassians is to resettle repatriates precisely in the areas from which the Russian Empire deported them to the Ottoman Empire. According to American researchers, the global Circassian population exceeds 6 million. However, only about 10% of them live in their historical homeland, while the remaining 90% are dispersed across the world-in Türkiye, Germany, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, France, the United States, Israel, and the Netherlands," the professor said.

Concluding his remarks, the expert called on the international community to officially recognize the Circassian genocide.
