The United States Department of Commerce is considering new restrictions on the import of robotics products from China amid national security concerns.
According to Politico, cited by Report, US officials warn that growing competition in robotics could escalate into a technological arms race.
The report states that the Commerce Department is reviewing products made by Chinese robotics manufacturers that receive government subsidies. Washington believes such support could pose a national security risk by enabling Chinese companies to expand more rapidly into global markets and outpace American competitors.
Sources cited by Politico note that robotics, alongside semiconductors and artificial intelligence technologies, is viewed as one of the key fronts in the technological rivalry between the United States and China.
The report also says that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick met with representatives of major American robotics and financial firms. Participants reportedly included representatives of SpaceX, Boston Dynamics, Siemens, Rockwell Automation, as well as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs.
