South Korea to deploy Soyang ship, P-8A aircraft to Strait of Hormuz

The South Korean government has drawn up a plan to potentially deploy a naval support vessel and a P‑8A maritime patrol aircraft to the Strait of Hormuz, amid the ongoing Middle East conflict.

According to Report, citing Chosun Daily, the proposal will be submitted to the National Security Council for review and approval, after which it must be passed by the National Assembly.

Officials are also examining possible docking locations. Options under consideration include the Soyang vessel, with a crew of about 140 personnel, and the P‑8A patrol aircraft, which can carry up to 20 people, including an eight‑member crew.

The Presidential Administration stressed that no final decision has yet been made, and various participation scenarios - including non‑combat operations – are being considered.

This process is unfolding under pressure from US President Donald Trump, who previously criticized Seoul for not providing sufficient support to Washington in its war against Iran.
