A fire broke out in the women's section of Rohrbach prison in southwestern Germany, leaving nine people injured.
According to Report, citing Bild, the fire started around 06:00 local time in one of the cells.
"As a result of the fire, nine people were injured. Four inmates, four staff members, and one firefighter were hospitalized in nearby clinics," the publication reported.
One of the inmates was transported by rescue helicopter to a specialized burn unit at the trauma clinic in Ludwigshafen. Four other prison staff members are undergoing preventive medical examinations.
A total of 45 firefighters were involved in extinguishing the blaze. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but arson is being considered the main hypothesis.
"At this stage, we assume it was arson. This theory is currently being investigated," prison director Annabel Franzen told Bild.
