NATO has confirmed that its air defense assets helped intercept Russian drones that violated Polish airspace, NATO spokesperson Allison Hart wrote on X, Report informs.
"Numerous drones entered Polish airspace overnight and were met with Polish and NATO air defences. NATO Secretary General is in touch with Polish leadership and NATO is consulting closely with Poland," she wrote.
In turn, Reuters, citing an unnamed source in NATO, says that the Alliance does not consider the incursion of Russian drones into Polish territory as a deliberate attack.
This was the first time that NATO aircraft attacked potentially dangerous objects in the airspace of an ally, the source said.
According to the source, Polish F-16 fighters, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS reconnaissance aircraft and air-to-air refueling aircraft jointly operated by NATO were involved in the night operation. As is known, on the night of September 10, Poland reported a violation of its airspace by Russian UAVs during a massive attack against Ukraine, and for the first time decided to shoot them down.
