Kallas condemns aggression against French diplomats in Iran

The European Union has strongly condemned what it called an attack on two employees of the French Embassy in Tehran, blaming Iranian security structures and urging the Iranian authorities to hold those responsible accountable, Report's European bureau informs.

The statement was issued by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

Kallas said the EU unequivocally condemned the aggression against two diplomats of the French Embassy in Tehran, which she said was committed by Iranian security forces on July 19.

According to Kallas, such actions constitute a gross violation of the Vienna Conventions and endanger the development of diplomatic relations. The EU expressed solidarity with France and called on Tehran to fully comply with its international obligations.

At a briefing in Brussels, Anouar El Anouni, spokesperson for the European External Action Service, said the EU foreign policy chief had held a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi over the weekend.

According to him, the sides discussed the situation in the Persian Gulf, as well as Russia's war against Ukraine. He declined to disclose details of the conversation, citing the confidentiality of diplomatic contacts.

Although El Anouni did not confirm that the incident involving the French diplomats was discussed during the call, Kallas's later statement condemning the attack suggests that the issue may also have been raised during contacts between the sides.

According to French authorities, two employees of the French Embassy in Tehran were attacked by representatives of Iranian security forces on July 19. Paris described the incident as a serious violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and demanded explanations from Iran, as well as security guarantees for French diplomatic personnel.

The EU has now publicly backed France's position, increasing pressure on Tehran.
