Group of US senators proposes using frozen Russian assets to fund arms for Ukraine

A bipartisan group of US senators has introduced a bill in the upper chamber of Congress proposing the purchase of weapons for Ukraine using funds from frozen Russian assets held abroad.

According to Report, citing the US Congress website, the draft legislation envisions allocating frozen funds of the Central Bank of Russia, along with other sovereign Russian assets, to finance these purposes.

The initiative, titled the "Confiscated Property for Military Equipment and Readiness Maintenance Act," was introduced by Democrats Tim Kaine, Chris Coons, and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Republicans John Cornyn, Roger Wicker, and Chuck Grassley.

Separately, The War Zone reports that the US Senate Armed Services Committee has requested data from the Pentagon on the possibility of additional transfers of Patriot (PAC-3) air defense missiles to Ukraine.

The committee has instructed the Defense Department to submit a report by October 1, 2026, assessing the feasibility of supplying PAC-3 interceptors to Ukraine, as well as the impact such deliveries could have on US military readiness and on fulfilling allied orders.
