German police are investigating a suspected act of sabotage at an electrical substation near Cologne and examining whether the incident may be linked to a recent attack on energy infrastructure in Brandenburg, Report informs, citing Tagesschau.
The suspicious incident occurred overnight on September 2 at a substation in a district of the city of Bergheim, located west of Cologne.
Initially, it was reported that several power lines had failed due to a short circuit. However, police later stated that they are considering a scenario involving "deliberate actions rather than a technical malfunction."
The incident did not result in power outages for consumers.
Investigators are checking for a possible connection between the incident and recent sabotage targeting power grids in the federal state of Brandenburg.
A police spokesperson noted that it is currently "too early" to disclose further details, while adding that the investigation is proceeding at a rapid pace.
