Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will take up a new post, heading a new North-South Commission on developing Germany's policy of assistance to developing countries.
Report informs, citing German media, that the decision to establish the commission was adopted by the federal government at a meeting in Berlin.
Scholz will co-chair the commission together with former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla. By the end of 2028, the commission is expected to submit a report with recommendations on the future direction of support for countries.
The initiative is aimed at developing a new concept for Germany's cooperation with developing countries amid current developments in world politics and growing budget constraints.
According to Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the commission will operate independently. It will include representatives of political circles, the private sector, trade unions, civil society and international organizations from both the Global South and the Global North.
The commission is expected to have around 20 members in total.
