Finland building SDG localization system through multi-level cooperation

Finland is developing its system for localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through long-term interagency and multi-level cooperation, Senior Adviser at Finland's Ministry of the Environment Jyri Juslén said during a panel discussion titled "Localizing the SDGs: Advancing Systemic Change Through Partnerships and Innovation" held within the framework of WUF13 in Baku.

Report quotes him as saying Finland has established a stable coordination system in the field of sustainable development, including urban programs that have been implemented since the 1990s.

He noted that the country launched a sustainable cities program covering more than 50 municipalities and aimed at implementing both the New Urban Agenda and the SDGs at the local level.

"Our National Commission on Sustainable Development plays a key role and is chaired by the prime minister. It has existed for 33 years and brings together parliamentarians, ministries, municipalities, regions, NGOs, and religious organizations. This demonstrates the broad scope of participation within a single coordination mechanism," he said.

Jyri Juslén also stressed that the Association of Finnish Cities and Municipalities and the system of voluntary national reviews make an important contribution to implementing the agenda by incorporating input from civil society, city networks, and regional consultations.
