Azerbaijani tea tradition featured in Euronews report

Euronews prepared a report on Azerbaijan"s tea culture to mark International Tea Day, describing tea as an essential part of daily life and social customs in the country.

The report said tea in Azerbaijan was served before meals, during business meetings, at family gatherings, weddings and funerals, and was regarded as central to hospitality and conversation.

According to the report, tea was traditionally poured from an elegant teapot into the distinctive pear-shaped "armudu" (pear-shaped) glass, whose narrow middle and rounded base were designed to retain heat while allowing the rim to cool slightly for drinking.

The authors were said to have noted that jam accompanied tea as an important element of the tradition. The jam was reportedly served separately in small crystal dishes rather than mixed into the drink, with guests first tasting the jam before taking a sip of tea.

Euronews also highlighted the craftsmanship involved in preparing traditional preserves, particularly walnut jam, which reportedly required repeated processing to achieve the desired texture and flavor.

The report added that, unlike industrial jams, Azerbaijani preserves were valued for maintaining the natural shape of fruits and berries, with attention given to both taste and presentation.
