Karabakh has potential to become an example of an integrated approach to reconstruction based on global standards, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Report informs that Alexandre Hedjazi, Associate Professor at the University of Geneva, said this while speaking at the event "Revival and Urbicide: Sustainable Urban Development and Resilient Communities" held as part of WUF13 in Baku.
According to him, post-conflict reconstruction of territories is a unique window of opportunity for introducing modern sustainable development standards.
"Reconstruction offers a rare chance to embed sustainable principles from the very beginning, rather than adding them afterward," he said.
Hedjazi noted that international experience shows the importance of taking into account the mistakes of previous reconstruction processes, including insufficient involvement of local communities.
He emphasized that long-term sustainability is impossible without involving the population in the governance and development of the territories.
