UN official: Rural-to-urban migration increases risks in cities

Migration from rural areas increases risks in cities.

Report informs that António Sampaio, adviser to the UN Climate Security Mechanism, said this at an event held as part of WUF13 in Baku.

He noted that the growing impact of climate change in rural areas is forcing many people to migrate to cities.

"However, those arriving in cities often end up in informal settlements, unstable labor markets and neighborhoods with weak rule of law. This exposes them to risks such as human trafficking, exploitation, violence, land disputes and lack of access to basic services. Thus, migration acts as a mechanism for transferring risks from rural areas to cities or creating new risks. Increasing population density in cities further exacerbates these risks," he said.
