UN-Habitat says migrants, transport and vacant homes poorly reflected in policies

Migrants, transport, and vacant housing are poorly reflected in national policies, Matthijs van Oostrum, representative of the Global Research and Analytics Division of the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), said at the event titled "From Policy to Impact: Scaling Up Housing Provision" organized within the framework of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) held in Baku, Report informs.

According to him, very few national housing policies address housing provision for migrant populations: "Very few look at access to public transport, very few look at vacant housing, very few look at the housing conditions of local and indigenous peoples. Africa is an exception here, which is quite interesting. So, naturally, a single national housing policy cannot cover all aspects of housing provision. In some places, certain elements are more important than others. However, for us, this was a clear signal that countries need to address the housing crisis comprehensively, and they should identify topics that are not yet well reflected and try to integrate them when updating their national housing policies."
