Mohd Sharif: WUF important platform to discuss urbanization challenges

The World Urban Forum (WUF) is an important platform for discussing the challenges of sustainable urbanization, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, former Executive Director of the UN‑Habitat program, told journalists in Baku during the 13th session of WUF (WUF13), Report informs.

She noted that the event brings together communities, policymakers, leaders at local, regional, national, and global levels, as well as youth and the private sector to discuss urbanization issues:

"The current theme is housing. I believe housing is a necessary element not only in Baku but globally, especially in Malaysia as well."

Mohd Sharif emphasized that housing must be accessible: "If affordable housing is far from workplaces, this is unacceptable. Housing is closely linked to education, people's livelihoods, and the economy. I think during these five days we will discuss this issue from all aspects. This morning, ministers will make statements, and leaders from around the world will commit not only to declarations but also to action when they return to their countries. Action is more important than statements, but we need leaders' commitment."

She further noted that housing is strongly connected to climate change, resilience, and the circular economy, stressing: "Housing is a fundamental pillar for the well‑being of the people we serve."
