Construction sector responsible for 37% of global CO2 emissions - Georgia Rambelli

The construction sector accounts for 37% of global CO2 emissions and 28% of worldwide energy consumption, Director of Urban Transitions Mission Georgia Rambelli said at WUF13 in Baku.

According to Report, Georgia Rambelli stated that residential areas and the built environment are at the center of both the urban climate agenda and the global development agenda.

"To achieve climate goals in this sector, fundamental changes are necessary. The construction and buildings sector alone is responsible for approximately 37% of global CO2 emissions and accounts for 28% of global energy consumption. In addition, this sector represents nearly 50% of global material extraction and has the largest material footprint of any industry," she said.

She added that cities fully understand the scale of the challenge and its impact on communities.

"When considering opportunities for decarbonization and improving the resilience of the built environment, cities deeply feel their responsibility for shaping a sustainable future," Rambelli noted.
