Yekaterinburg incident is clear example of national discrimination against Azerbaijanis in Russia

The use of force and particularly brutal acts and murders committed against Azerbaijanis by the law enforcement agencies of Russia in the city of Yekaterinburg are a clear example of national discrimination, Rizvan Nabiyev, a member of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis, said in his statement to Report.

Nabiyev noted that the Russian Federation is committed to ensuring human rights within the framework of both national legislation and international obligations:

"Article 20 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation guarantees the right of every person to life, and Article 21 establishes the right not to be subjected to torture, violent and degrading treatment or punishment. The incident in question should be assessed as a violation of these fundamental rights. Such violations are not only a threat to individual freedoms, but also a violation of the constitutional legal regime."

The MP emphasized that the Russian Federation has also violated the provisions of the international Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, to which it is a party.

"According to this convention, the participating states are obliged to prevent cases of torture and to hold those who commit such cases accountable. The Yekaterinburg incident is assessed as a violation of the main provisions of this convention and raises the issue of the application of international legal responsibility," he stressed.

Nabiyev added that the current fact, in addition to being a violation of law from the point of view of both national and international law, should be assessed as a failure of the state to comply with its obligations in the field of human rights.

On the morning of June 27, the Russian Federal Security Service raided houses where Azerbaijanis lived in Yekaterinburg. During the raid, two Azerbaijanis were killed and several others were detained. The murdered Azerbaijanis are the brothers of the well-known journalist Seyfaddin Huseynli.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs also released a statement on June 28 regarding the attacks on Azerbaijanis by the Russian Federal Security Service in Yekaterinburg.

In addition, the Russian chargé d'affaires was summoned to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the incident in Yekaterinburg, and a strong protest was expressed.
