Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva have laid flowers at the Monument to those who died for the independence of Lithuania, Report’s correspondent from Vilnius informs.

The monument is located at the Antakalnis Cemetery. Those killed during the seizure of the buildings of the Lithuanian Radio and Television and the Vilnius TV Tower by the Soviet troops are buried there.

During the assault on the building, 13 civilians were killed and about 700 were injured. On January 16, 1991, a burial ceremony was held at the Antakalnis Cemetery in Vilnius. In memory of the victims of the tragic events of 1991, January 13 is celebrated as the Freedom Defenders’ Day in Lithuania.

The Azerbaijani president was invited to pay an official visit to Lithuania by his colleague Gitanas Nauseda during the Davos Forum in January this year.
