Mukhtar Babayev highlights importance of regional environmental cooperation

Mukhtar Babayev, Azerbaijan's Presidential Representative on Climate Issues and COP29 President, has highlighted the growing importance of practical regional cooperation in addressing shared environmental challenges.

Babayev wrote this on X after attending and addressing the 6th ECO Ministerial Meeting on Environment in Samarkand, Report informs.

According to him, the meeting brought together regional partners to strengthen cooperation on climate, environment and sustainable development across the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) region.

Babayev noted that practical and implementation-oriented regional cooperation is becoming increasingly important in addressing shared environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution, land degradation and resource efficiency.

He added that at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan and the ECO Secretariat launched the RESCUE Initiative on resource efficiency and circular economy to support a just transition toward more sustainable and resource-efficient economies across the region.

Babayev also said Azerbaijan is advancing efforts to establish the ECO Clean Energy Centre in Baku in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
