Azerbaijan is of interest to Germany in ensuring energy security, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, according to Report's correspondent in Berlin.
"We want to seek to intensify cooperation in the coming years, especially in the field of energy savings. As the German side, we are extremely interested in the diversification of imports, including gas imports. Azerbaijan is one of the countries in the region that has an energy surplus, meaning it produces more than it consumes. Therefore, when it comes to ensuring Germany's energy supply, Azerbaijan is of interest to us as a partner," he stated.
Merz added that after stopping gas supplies from Russia four and a half years ago, Germany naturally began searching for new supply sources: "And here Azerbaijan plays an important role. This creates interesting economic perspectives for us. We have also found other supply sources. Therefore, I am once again grateful to President Ilham Aliyev for the opportunity to discuss this issue today, as well as the prospects for further increasing the volume of gas supplies from Azerbaijan. This is also the subject of our joint agreement and will be discussed in the course of future negotiations we will conduct with Azerbaijan."
