Mario Flores: Post-conflict recovery should not be limited to housing construction

Post-crisis and post-conflict recovery should include not only housing construction, but also the creation of conditions for full-fledged life, work and community development.

Report informs that Mario Flores, director of International Field Operations for Housing Resilience and Recovery at Habitat for Humanity International, said this during WUF13.

According to him, housing should be viewed not only as a physical space, but also as an important tool for the development of society.

Flores noted that housing is not only about having "four walls and a roof," but also about access to services, children"s education and community building.

"A home can become a base from which a family can earn income, look for work and develop economic activity," he said.

Flores stressed that even in extremely difficult conditions, including the situation in Gaza, recovery cannot be limited only to building homes.

"We cannot think only about housing recovery. We need to rebuild full-fledged communities, services and opportunities for life and work," he said.

According to him, the starting point for this remains the confirmation of property rights.

The expert added that it is the confirmation and protection of property rights that create the basis for rebuilding communities and realizing other rights of the population after crises.
