Anita Lal: India's repression affects not only Sikhs but other communities as well

The problem of transnational repression in India affects not only Sikhs but also other communities, including Dalits and Muslims, and its roots extend far beyond the 1984 events in Amritsar, Anita Lal, a representative of the US Dalit community, told journalists at an international conference entitled "Amritsar June 1984: Transnational Repression as an Extension of Genocide" held in Baku, Report informs.

According to her, the events of 1984 are not the first instance of persecution of minorities in India.

"The events of 1984 were not the first time something like this has happened to our people. Since then, transnational forms of repression have continued across borders – not only against Sikhs, but also Dalits, Muslims, and anyone who expresses dissent against the Indian government. Therefore, it is crucial to build connections with those who understand the importance of human rights, develop dialogue around these issues, and move forward with the hope of real change, giving hundreds of millions of people around the world, deprived of basic rights due to fear of transnational pressure, a chance at freedom and justice," she said.

According to her, participating in the event organized by the Baku Initiative Group was her first such experience.

"We thank the Baku Initiative Group and the government of Azerbaijan for not only hosting us but also providing a platform to discuss this truly important topic. I appreciate the platform, attention, and opportunity for collaboration," she noted.
