President of Kenya William Samoei Ruto has called for Africa to be represented on the United Nations Security Council, describing the current situation as a major paradox.
According to Report, Ruto made the remarks during the Leaders Summit held for the first time in the history of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku.
He noted that despite Africa's population of 1.5 billion people, the continent is not represented in the UN's highest decision-making body.
"This is the greatest paradox regarding the African continent," Ruto said. "Sixty percent of the agenda of the United Nations Security Council is devoted to African issues. Imagine that your problems are being resolved at a table where you are not represented."
The Kenyan president stressed that reforms are necessary to ensure the continued relevance of the United Nations and to eliminate existing inequalities.
"We have the opportunity in Baku to demand that Africa's right to representation at the UN Security Council be ensured," he added.
