German ambassador: Relations with Azerbaijan remain pragmatic and stable

Relations between Azerbaijan and Germany have always been pragmatic, stable, and consistently developing, German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Ralf Horlemann said at a farewell meeting with Azerbaijani journalists, Report informs.

He noted that the history of bilateral ties dates back to the 19th century, when the first German settlers arrived in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador recalled that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited Azerbaijan for the first time last year, while Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has visited Germany several times during his tenure in Baku.

Horlemann noted that the German government, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, has defined three main foreign policy priorities: security, prosperity, and freedom.

He added that cooperation with Azerbaijan is also developing in line with these priorities.

"We are building dialogue, cooperation, and relations with Azerbaijan around these three areas, discussing them in various formats. Political consultations are held annually," he said.

The ambassador noted that trade relations are seeing steady, albeit gradual, economic growth. He stated that last year, bilateral trade volume amounted to approximately 1.7 billion euros.
