Cerin Kizhakkethottam: Climate risks can be reduced without relocating populations

Most climate risks can be reduced through resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions without the need to relocate populations.

Report informs that Cerin Kizhakkethottam, Special Adviser to the Deputy Executive Director of UN-Habitat, said this at an event held as part of WUF13.

"UN-Habitat has a wide range of tools for climate change adaptation, a significant part of which is based on creating resilient infrastructure and sustainable settlements," Kizhakkethottam said.

According to her, the measures used include restoring water sluices, planting mangrove forests, creating buffer zones, introducing nature-based solutions, and organizing small park spaces to reduce heat stress.

"There are a huge number of measures that can be implemented before relocation becomes necessary," she emphasized.
