Ensuring social protection for the population must always remain a priority in any investment agreement, Nasiphi Moya, Executive Mayor of Tshwane (the district where South Africa's capital is located), said at a panel discussion as part of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku, Report informs.
"Investments in infrastructure or production facilities only yield genuine results when they directly contribute to improving the standard of living of citizens and create secure, well-paid jobs. For this reason, economic development should not be pursued at the expense of people's rights, and authorities and the business community should strike a balance where social guarantees and the well-being of residents are the key metrics for the success of any major project," the mayor emphasized.
